Indoor tanning is a very controversial practice. For those of you who don't know a lot about this topic, here's a quick overview. It basically involves the use of a device that emits UV rays for cosmetic tanning purposes. These things are called tanning beds or sunbeds are quite popular in Europe and North America. If you'd like to know what these units look like, wander down to the local Fabutan and check them out. Any reputable tanning salon will happily show you around.

Now, most people are aware of the fact that indoor tanning has a pretty bad reputation. This is due to various risks associated with tanning in general. It's universally understood that skin diseases and sun exposure go hand in hand. Having said that, this article isn't about anything health related. If you're interested in tanning, I encourage you to do a lot of research before hitting the sunbed. The purpose of this piece is to answer a question that's asked by many folks exploring the world of sun tanning beds - What is a Wolff Tanning Bed?

Well, let's start at the beginning. The "Wolff" name is synonymous with tanning beds nowadays. This is due to the fact that Friedrich Wolff introduced the modern sunbed to Americans. He brought it here in 1978 and quickly expanded his business. First off, he sold complete sunbeds. These were provided to tanning salons as a complete system including the bed, lamps and bulbs. He eventually downsized his business, though, focusing just on the lamp technology responsible for the tanning effect. He sold this technology to other companies, who in turn made the sunbeds and sold them to end users and salon owners.

The company today is known as Wolff Systems and is recognized throughout the tanning industry for their extremely high quality lamps. Many companies, including ETS Inc and Sun Industries refuse to use anything other than Wolff sun lamps. Due to this fact, many high quality sun beds are now known as Wolff Tanning Beds.

So how can one tell if a tanning bed uses Wolff technology? Well, this is really quite simple. Every sunbed that sports Wolff lamps is tagged with a very unique logo. It says "Wolff System" in big bold letters can't be missed. If you're a tanner and want to make sure you're getting a nice, even suntan, make sure you check the sunbed you prefer for this symbol.
